Helical Tie-Back Anchors Sheet Pile Wall
The Horizon Oil Sand Project in Fort McMurray, Alberta required a sheet pile wall to provide excavation shoring to facilitate the construction of a deep building foundation. This sheet pile had to be installed 28′-0″ deep into loose sand and required tie-back anchors for its lateral support which could also be installed in extremely adverse weather conditions with temperatures as low as -40°C.
A Helical Anchoring System proved to be ideally suited for this application and was custom designed for the soil conditions to provide ultimate capacities up to 80,000 lbs. Three rows of anchors were installed using a skid steer loader equipped with a hydraulically powered drive head and were screwed into the soil until the required installation torques were achieved thus verifying their capacity. These anchors were successfully installed and load tested despite the adverse weather conditions.
